At Filos, we are proud to shine the spotlight on Marcus Tan, our dedicated Senior Social Worker, in celebration of World Social Work Day 2025. With 17 years of experience in the field, Marcus brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to his role, having worked with at-risk youths, seniors, and individuals facing mental health challenges. Since joining Filos, Marcus has been leading our Community Intervention Team (COMIT) and Community Resource, Engagement, and Support Team (CREST), mentoring colleagues, and strengthening our social work and mental health capabilities.

Marcus’ journey into social work was shaped by his university studies and his heart for service, nurtured through years of volunteering at his church. He saw social work as a practical way to make a meaningful impact — and that purpose continues to drive him today.

Like all social workers, Marcus has faced tough days. What keeps him going is his belief that every challenge is a learning opportunity. Reflecting on the good that has happened, even in difficult seasons, reminds him that every effort contributes to a larger purpose. The most rewarding moments, Marcus shares, come when clients express how his support has made a real difference in their lives, and especially when they feel inspired to pay it forward and support others in the community.

This year’s World Social Work Day theme, “Strengthening Intergenerational Solidarity for Enduring Wellbeing,” resonates deeply with Marcus — both professionally and personally. As a father of two young boys, he hopes to instil strong values in them, just as he values the collective wisdom shared between colleagues of different generations at Filos.

To aspiring social workers, Marcus offers this advice, “have a willing heart to serve, listen well, and stay adaptable.” These qualities, he believes, will help future social workers thrive in a constantly evolving landscape.
